# How to Use Placeholders in SEO Titles and Descriptions?

To avoid duplicate meta descriptions across your job board and improve SEO, it’s important to use **placeholders** correctly in the **SEO Tools > SEO Titles & Descriptions** section of your dashboard.

|| Note: You can only use placeholders that are already included in the title for that section.

# Why Use Placeholders?

Placeholders dynamically pull in content (like category names, job titles, or locations) to create unique SEO titles and descriptions for each page. This helps search engines better understand and index your pages, while preventing duplication issues.

### Best Practices

* Use placeholders in **both** the title and the description fields.
* Make sure placeholders are written in **all caps** and start with a colon (:).
* Example placeholders:

:CATEGORY_NAME
:LOCATION_NAME
:JOB_TITLE

### Example

Instead of writing a static meta description like:
“Browse open jobs in this category.”

Use a dynamic one:
“Browse the latest :CATEGORY_NAME jobs available now.”

This way, each category page will generate a unique description, such as:

“Browse the latest **Marketing** jobs available now.”
“Browse the latest **Engineering** jobs available now.”

### Common Tip

If your SEO titles already include placeholders like :CATEGORY_NAME, you can safely use the same ones in the description. Just double-check that they’re properly formatted (capitalized with a leading colon) so the system can recognize and apply them.
